INDUSTRY REQUIRES INNOVATION TO THRIVE

Farmers are reliant on continued innovation by their suppliers in order to meet the challenges and legislative demands being placed on their businesses according to David Aveyard, European Sales and Market Director: Agriculture with hygiene specialists Diversey.

Mr Aveyard maintains that dairy farmers are faced with enormous environmental and legislative requirements while at the same time having to drive efficiency from every aspect of their business and it is up to the supply trade to provide the products to allow them to do so. “There is no way farmers can face these challenges alone. They need the support of the entire supply chain to help develop new solutions to the problems ahead of them in both the short and long term.

“Across all sectors there is a need for robust, well-researched and competitively priced products. Innovation is a crucial element of a market’s ability to remain healthy and competitive. If suppliers fail to invest in product innovation it will be increasingly difficult for dairy farmers to run efficient, legally compliant businesses.

“In our own sector of dairy hygiene, farmers are going to have to adapt to the impact of the Biocidal Products Directive (BPD) which will mean some well-known products will no longer be available while the waste packaging regulations are casting the spotlight on how products are delivered.

“As a supplier we are working to ensure farmers can buy a full range of dairy chemicals which are BPD compliant, are suited to every milking plant configuration and can develop effective farm hygiene. At the same time we are striving to reduce the quantity of waste plastic produced by farm businesses.”

Mr Aveyard stresses that Diversey is committed to leading the field in innovation in dairy hygiene, based on proven products and robust evaluation. In the last two years Diversey has totally reviewed its product range to ensure it is BPD compliant, has launched a new teat disinfectant designed to combine outstanding bacterial kill with exceptional teat conditioning and has introduced a new concept in circulation cleaning which reduces waste plastic by 70% while greatly improving operator health and safety.

“Companies that continue to innovate can help secure a long term future for the UK dairy farming sector and ensure it is in good stead to face all future challenges,” Mr Aveyard concludes.
